A lot athletic departments don't turn a profit.

It's all in the accounting. You have one set of books for the IRS, one for Equity in Athletics, etc.
However, you reach a certain point in revenue where subsidies from the school should stop. I don't know what that number is but $100 million is way above the threshold.
